There’s nothing like indulging in an authentic Maharashtrian thali when you’re in Pune, especially when it brings the bold, robust flavors of Kolhapur to your plate. During my August 2024 visit to Pune, my family and I had the pleasure of dining at Dehaati. It’s a relatively new restaurant on Prabhat Road that specializes in Kolhapuri cuisine.

Conveniently, the restaurant is just a two-minute walk from my parents’ place! I had been eager to try it after passing by multiple times a day on my way out or coming back home. So, we set out for an intimate family dinner with my folks to celebrate our trip back home. It was a great opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal together and make the most of our time during the visit.
Insider Tip If you plan to visit Dehaati, keep in mind that they don’t take reservations, and wait times can get really long during peak dinner hours, typically around 8:30-9 PM. Since my family tends to eat dinner earlier, we arrived right when the restaurant opened at 7 pm and were seated immediately. By the time we wrapped up our meal, a crowd was already forming at the door!
As we entered through the door, the restaurant’s rustic interiors wowed us! With their nods to rural Kolhapur, it made our dining experience even more special.

Cane lights, vintage copper vessels, braids of onions, garlic and chilies hanging along the walls and wooden furniture gave the place a warm, earthy and welcoming vibe. It felt like a true countryside escape right in the heart of Pune!

We were a group of six, and each of us ordered a different thali, giving us the chance to experience a little bit of everything from the menu. And trust me, it was a feast like no other!

Each thali comes with the main dish, a side dish, unlimited servings of their signature broths- Tambda Rassa and Pandhra Rassa, two pieces of flatbreads (whole wheat chapatis or millet bhakris), steamed white rice or Indrayani rice pilaf and a yogurt-based red onion raita. My husband, a hardcore non-vegetarian, predictably went for the Mutton Masala Thali. My cousin couldn’t resist the Chicken Masala Thali, while my daughter, an egg lover, ordered the Egg Curry Thali.

Since it was Shravan (lunar month), my parents were strictly vegetarian. They ordered the Bharli Vangi and Akkha Masoor Thalis. As for me, I decided to keep them company and opted for the Veg Pithla Thali.

Each thali was beautifully plated, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of Kolhapur. From bhakris to pulao, and unlimited servings of tambda and pandhra rassa, every bite was a testament to the restaurant’s dedication to authenticity.
While everything we tried was packed with flavor, the standout dish for me was the Egg Curry Thali. The perfectly spiced curry, combined with fluffy rice and bhakri, was simply irresistible.

It struck the right balance between heat and depth, something I hadn’t experienced with egg curries before. I couldn’t stop stealing bites from my daughter’s plate!
To complement our meal, we also ordered a serving of Sol Kadhi, and it was divine!

This traditional coconut milk-based drink, flavored with kokum, was incredibly refreshing. Its tangy-sweet flavor provided the perfect contrast to the spiciness of the thalis, leaving me craving more.
Speaking of balance, Dehaati’s famous tambda and pandhra rassa lived up to their reputation. The broths, served with every thali, had the most magical flavors!

The tambda rassa had a bold, fiery kick, while the pandhra rassa was creamy and soothing—a perfect contrast to each other. Together, they brought an unforgettable depth to the entire dining experience. I’ve had rassa many times before, but nothing quite like this.
At Dehaati, they offer a unique end to the dining experience with their finger bowl—it’s a simple yet thoughtful gesture.

The bowl contains black tea with a lemon wedge, which is believed to help neutralize the strong aromas of the spices, leaving your hands feeling fresh after a flavorful meal.
Dehaati brings Kolhapur to Pune in the best way possible—with delicious thalis that are rich in tradition, taste, and heart. If you’re in the mood for a culinary journey filled with spice, depth, and regional authenticity, Dehaati should be at the top of your list. Whether you’re a meat lover or a vegetarian, their thalis promise something special for everyone. I can’t wait to return on my next visit!
