Here’s a super simple and an easy idea to elevate the regular potato chips to a whole new level with a fun Indian spin – Masala Chips! Inspired by the popular Indian Masala Papad, I came up with a this quick way by swapping the papad with readily available potato chips for my afternoon snack.
What’s Masala Papad?
For the uninitiated, Masala Papad is a crispy, wafer-thin lentil cracker topped with a zesty mix of fresh tomatoes, onions and spices. It’s finished off with a generous amount of sev (fine chickpea flour fried crushed noodles) and cilantro for freshness.
I remembered this delicious savory treat from my recent trip to Pune, India and was craving it but didn’t have any papad on hand. Then I spotted a bag of salty, potato chips in my pantry and had an aha moment!
I simply topped the potato chips with the spiced fresh tomato-onion masala and turned it into a party platter! Potato chips worked out very well and I devoured the whole platter in a matter of minutes 😋
What’s not to love?
This is a great dish to make for laid back summer days when you’re not in a mood to cook or during the busy holiday season when you need a last minute dish to add to the festive spread.
It’s a fun, no-cook snack or an appetizer thats festive with the red and green colors and can be assembled together in a few minutes, with a handful of basic ingredients.
Here’s how easy it is to put together in minutes:
Spread potato chips on a platter, top with finely diced red onions, tomatoes, sliced green chilies (if you want or use a sprinkling of red chili powder)
Then sprinkle some chat masala on it for that pop of flavor.
Finish off with sev (fine chickpea flour fried crushed noodles) and chopped cilantro/coriander leaves.
Serve immediately…and before you know, it’ll be gone!!
