When a dim sum-loving friend suggested we check out Bao, a new spot in downtown Redwood City, I was intrigued. I don’t typically seek out dim sum (my fav Chinese food is Indian-Chinese), but I’ll never say no to a great meal.

We went for lunch, and from the moment we walked in, I knew this place was special. The vibrant atmosphere, chic interiors, and seamless tablet-based ordering system made for a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Despite being packed, the service was impressively fast and attentive. Servers checked in regularly, ensuring we had everything we needed. I enjoyed my lunch so much that I returned the very next weekend—this time with my family, especially for my husband, who loves dim sum. Over multiple visits, I ended up trying nearly everything on the dim sum menu, from steamed and baked to deep-fried and pan-fried.

A few standout dishes have become my go-to orders:

Chicken Lettuce Wraps – Fresh and light, a great option if you’re looking for something lighter.

Baked BBQ Pork Buns – A must-try! The light, flaky crust melts in your mouth with every bite.

Steamed Scallop & Shrimp Dumplings – Almost too pretty to eat, but absolutely delicious.

Shrimp & Pea Sprout Dumplings – The earthy pea sprouts add a fresh twist to the classic shrimp dumpling.

Spicy Wontons – Perfectly balanced heat with a silky, flavorful sauce.

Fried Shrimp Balls – Crispy, crunchy, and addictive, especially when dipped in the sweet sauce.

Stir-Fried String Beans – Consistently excellent, with just the right amount of crunch and seasoning.

Xiao Long Bao (Soup Dumplings) – Served in little aluminum cups, which I haven’t seen anywhere else. They hold all that rich, savory broth in every bite.

Chicken Moo Shu Wraps – My personal favorite from the small plates menu. They have the perfect balance of flavor and texture.

And no visit to Bao is complete without their rose tea—served in an adorable kettle, steeping with delicate rosebuds that make it as visually beautiful as it is aromatic.

Bao has won me over, even as someone who doesn’t naturally gravitate toward dim sum. It’s the kind of place where great food meets great service, and I already know I’ll be back again soon.
