On our recent trip, we found ourselves once again falling in love with the rich flavors and diverse culinary offerings that make Houston a true food lover’s paradise. One cuisine that we consistently find ourselves returning to is Tex-Mex. The perfect blend of Mexican and Texan influences creates a unique and irresistible array of dishes that keep us coming back for more. Whether it’s the spicy tacos, savory enchiladas or the sizzling fajitas, Tex-Mex never disappoints and remains a staple in our Houston dining adventures. No trip to Houston is complete without a visit to our all-time favorite restaurant. This Tex-Mex gem has been a staple on our Houston itinerary ever since our first visit almost a decade ago! The warm, welcoming atmosphere and the mouthwatering food & drinks keep drawing us back.
Their famous fajitas, with perfectly seasoned and tender meat and their hearty enchiladas with rice and beans, are our family favorites and a must-try!
As you sit down, the server hands you the menus and puts a big bowl of their housemade tortilla chips along with salsa and beans that are hard to resist.
I love to start off with a refreshing mango margarita on the rocks, served in a beautiful hand-blown margarita glass. The tangy sweetness of the mango sets the perfect tone for a delightful meal ahead.
After snacking on the tortilla chips, beans, salsa, and some guac, I’m ready for the best shrimp fajitas in the whole world! It’s my go-to dish from their menu.
I simply have to order the shrimp fajitas, served over a bed of perfectly grilled onions and topped with grilled jalapeños and chipotle peppers. They arrive sizzling, accompanied by a side of spicy drawn butter, perfect for dunking each succulent shrimp. This dish is an explosion of flavors and textures that never fails to delight my taste buds.
Their freshly made tortillas are unlike any tortillas I’ve had at other Mexican joints across the country or even in Mexico! The flour tortillas, which we order based on our friends’ recommendation, are thin and soft, much like the popular Indian roomali roti. These tortillas are the perfect complement to the shrimp fajitas, adding a delightful texture and making each bite truly memorable.
Paired with their freshly made tortillas and all the fixings, these shrimp fajitas create a divine combination that hits all the right notes every single time.

On our recent trip, our friends decided to introduce us to Velvet Taco in the West U neighborhood. Let me tell you, it was an amazing experience!
The quirky-cool taco joint features about 20 different globally inspired, made-to-order tacos and “WTF” Weekly Taco Feature on their menu.
We were spoiled for choice, but a few stood out as instant favorites.
Chips & Dips Trio with Queso, Guac and Pobloano Salsa and Blue Corn Tortilla Chips
The chimichurri steak were a burst of flavor and the quesa birria were so hearty and comforting. We also tried the Indian inspired spicy chicken tikka tacos that had the perfect balance of heat and spices and the fried paneer tacos were a delightful twist, offering a crispy texture that complemented the creamy paneer. And then there were the sweet chili shrimp tacos—a taste that instantly transported me back to the similar ones I enjoyed in Sydney.
