Chill in a Glass

Some mornings just call for coffee—but cold, creamy, and a little nostalgic. This Cold Coffee Milkshake is my tribute to growing up in India on instant coffee.

It’s the frothy, chilled version of a latte that’s as quick to make as it is satisfying, and a total summer favorite in Indian homes and cafés alike.

My Summer Staple

Back when summer breaks meant sleeping in and lazy mornings, my day would often start with a glass of cold coffee—blended until frothy, sweetened just right, and served icy cold. And now, it’s how my daughter starts her summer mornings too!

For me, this drink is more than just a caffeine fix. It reminds me of summer mornings at home—quick to make, always refreshing, and a constant through the years. Now, it’s part of my daughter’s morning routine too!

Cold Coffee Culture in India

In India, Cold Coffee isn’t just a drink—it’s a vibe. Walk into any college canteen, train station café, or your favorite hangout from back in the day, and chances are Cold Coffee will be on the menu. Often made with Indian instant coffee—Nescafe or Bru being the undisputed staples—it’s a comfort drink that generations have grown up sipping through plastic straws on hot afternoons. It’s easily one of the most beloved drinks across India. You’ll find jazzed-up versions everywhere—from five-star hotel menus to tiny street-side joints.

Unlike the iced coffees you’ll find elsewhere in the world, the Indian version is almost always blended till frothy. No floating ice cubes or espresso shots here! Just milk, sugar, and instant coffee whirled into a creamy drink with that unmistakable bubbly top. Sometimes, it’s served with whipped cream topping, a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of chocolate syrup on the inside of the glass or on top, but the heart of it lies in its simplicity.

One of my favorite places to drink it has always been Marzorin Café in Pune. Tucked away on MG Road, it’s a nostalgic gem where I always order Cold Coffee to go with their classic chicken burger. Even now, whenever I’m visiting Pune, that order never changes.

Just 3 Ingredients

At home, I like to keep it classic and simple with just three ingredients: instant filter coffee (I recommend Indian brands like Nescafe or Bru), cold milk, and sugar. That’s it!

Blend it on high speed for 2–3 minutes until frothy (especially if you’re making a big batch), or shake it vigorously in a handheld blender bottle (also a great morning arm workout!). I use reduced-fat milk most days, but feel free to go full-fat if you like a richer flavor. Prefer it unsweetened? Skip the sugar or swap in a sweetener of your choice.

Jazz It Up

My everyday version is quick and fuss-free, but you can totally dress it up when the mood strikes. Blend in a scoop of vanilla ice cream to turn it into a decadent dessert drink, add a scoop of coffee ice cream to turn it into a Cold Coffee Mastani or top it with whipped cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup for a café-style presentation. For a little flair, a dusting of cocoa powder or fine chocolate shavings on top takes it up a notch.

This also makes a great afternoon pick-me-up or a refreshing treat to go with your lunch or for easy entertaining on a hot day.

Why You’ll Love It

This Cold Coffee Milkshake is creamy, refreshing, and full of Indian coffee-shop nostalgia. It’s made with pantry staples, takes less than 2 minutes, and brings a bit of magic to your morning routine.

Whether you’re starting your day or cooling off in the afternoon, this chilled classic is easy to love—and for me, it’s a little taste of childhood! And if you’re as into cold coffee as I am, be sure to check out my Cold Coffee Cake Pudding. It’s the same flavors, reimagined as a dreamy dessert.
