I’ve never been a huge fan of the classic tuna salad with its mayo-heavy texture and the occasional hidden celery 😛 . So I decided to make one that actually excites my taste buds, and my family’s too! My version is vibrant, refreshing, and zesty, brightened with lemon, cilantro, and green onions.
I usually grab tuna packed in water and drizzle a little extra virgin olive oil, but you can use tuna in olive oil instead (although you might have to drain some of the olive oil it comes in).
The salad comes together in minutes, yet it feels anything but ordinary. It has found its place at our table in so many forms. My husband enjoys it as tartine or open-faced sandwich, my daughter prefers hers sandwiched between slices of hearty sourdough wheat bread, and I love it as a salad topping over mixed greens with cannellini beans, shaved fennel, cucumber, or even some lightly steamed artichokes.
Sometimes, I even turn it into an upscale dining experience by shaping the tuna salad into a round pâté, mixing in microcilantro, and topping it with a microrainbow mix. Bright pink, green, and white watermelon radishes add a wonderful peppery crunch, served alongside lightly toasted homemade sourdough bread. It’s versatile, playful, and always visually inviting.
While simple in ingredients, the flavors feel elevated, a nod to the kind of modern Indian-inspired table I try to create at home.
How I Put It Together at Home
I usually start with a can of good-quality tuna packed in olive oil, lightly drained and flaked with a fork. From there, it’s minced spring onion, tender cilantro stems and leaves, plenty of lemon zest and juice, and just enough salt and freshly cracked pepper to bring everything alive. I mix it gently and stop as soon as it holds together, it should stay light, not mashed.
The bright lemon notes and fresh cilantro bring freshness to the meal, making it perfect for a quick weekday lunch, a picnic, or even a light dinner when paired with pasta or beans. You can even make a batch ahead; it keeps in an airtight container in the fridge for 4–5 days without losing its charm.
Whether tucked between bread slices, layered over greens, or served alongside a bowl of grains, this humble salad proves that simple ingredients, treated with a little love and care, can transform a familiar idea into something your whole family will actually look forward to.
